Champagne Georges Laval ‘Garennes’ / Extra Brut * Chavot, Champagne, NV
Vincent Laval makes undoubtedly some of the most sought after wines within the grower producer geek circles and we could not be more honored to share. He is the fourth generation growing grapes in Cumières and they’ve been certified Organic since the early seventies. This is thoughtfully crafted and meticulously nurtured wine through and through, it’s easy to see why it’s so difficult to come by.
Citrus rinds, hazelnuts and yellow miso. Not exactly your normal Champagne descriptors, eh? Well there are several factors at play here that make this heady bubbly uniquely delicious beyond its peers. First of all, welcome to the world of Pinot Meunier, where up is often down and the traditional fruit driven complexions of Pinot Noir or Chardonnay based Champagnes can steer a touch closer towards the umami side of the palate. Secondly, this wine is a whopping 60% reserve wine! Meaning that Vincent Laval has masterfully blended a fresh base wine with past vintages that he keeps like a well protected time capsule. This is not an uncommon practice, though generally in lesser amounts. In fact, there are a number of producers that use reserve wines dating back to 20+ years old in some cases (Krug is actually the King of reserve wine blending.) It’s a process that allows for maximum artistry in the winemaker’s arsenal of tools when it comes to making great Champagne.
Fine Details – Organically farmed 40% Pinot Meunier 2017 from Chambrecy / Montagne de Reims. Reserve wine from Cumieres is 30%PM, 5% PN from 2011 / 20% PM 2013 & 5% CH 2014 from Cumières – fermented in neutral Burgundy Barrels. Minimal S02. Disgorged in Summer, 2018. 2 grams per liter dosage.
