U Stiliccionu ‘Antica’ Nielluccio * Ajaccio, Corsica, France 2015

Nielluccio is Corsican for Sangiovese, actually, but you’ll not easily mistake it for its relative wines from the Italian mainland. A fruit and savory balancing act  with flavors of roasted fennel bulbs drizzled with a bit of balsamic as well as a baked strawberry and rhubarb pie. This wine doesn’t see any oak, thankfully, and there are some well integrated sweet tannins that lend the wine a slightly more serious structure. The finish is all dried cherries and very pleasant earthy tobacco element.

Domaine U Stiliccionu ‘Antica’
Ajaccio, Corsica, France 2015

The vineyard was planted in 1961 on granite and shale soil and facing east, giving it full sun exposure from dawn till dusk. Sébastien Poly has been at the helm here for more than a decade, when his grandfather passed his dream and life’s work onto him. Sébastien quickly transitioned the property over to biodynamic farming and has been making stellar wines with true respect for old Corsican traditions ever since. He uses a true minimum intervention approach and works hard to express the healthy grapes and soil, nothing else, in his wines and uses very little sulphur to ensure the wines stability.
